EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Officials say there was a fire at an Evansville apartment with several pets inside.
They say the call came in around 8:15 p.m. in the 2500 block of Sterling Drive at The Westcott apartment complex.
Although no one was home at the time, the apartment had animals inside.
Crews on scene say at least one dog was rescued, but they were unable to get all of them.
Three apartments were affected, with two upper apartments on fire and an apartment underneath sustaining water damage.
They say the fire spread from one apartment through the attic to the other.
One resident of an adjacent apartment describes the scene as chaotic.
“Oh my God, it was straight panic the closer I got to the complex the more worrisome I got,” Jeffrey Nellom says. “Seeing the flames coming through the roof, I thought, ‘Oh my God,’ this is crazy.”

Authorities say they had to cut through the roof to access the fire.
Fire investigators are on scene.
At this time, the cause of the fire is still unknown.
We will update you as we learn more.
