SANFORD, Maine — A family was displaced following a fire that destroyed their two-story apartment Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to 128 Emery St. after receiving a report of a blaze sometime after 10 a.m. When they arrived, they saw flames shooting from the back door and first-floor window of the apartment and smoke billowing from the open front door, from which the occupants likely had fled, according to Assistant Fire Chief of Operations Rick Smith.

Smith said he did not know how many family members were at home at the time of the fire. He said one pet, a rat, perished in the incident.

While firefighters quickly knocked the fire down, the incident caused significant damage, Smith said.

“The apartment itself is a total loss, but the building is not,” Smith said.

While the adjacent apartment in the complex was not damaged by the blaze, the family that lives there may need to wait a bit before they return home, Smith added.

“We’ll have to do an investigation and see if there is any smoke or chemicals that got in there,” he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The apartment is part of the East Side Acres, a public housing development overseen by the Sanford Housing Authority.

On Tuesday, Diane Small, the director of the housing authority, said the family and their next-door neighbors are being helped by the American Red Cross and Shannon Bentley, the social worker for the Sanford Police Department.

Small thanked all first responders who reported to the incident, from the firefighters who battled the flames to the police officers who managed the scene and brought in the American Red Cross.

“We are so thankful that everyone got out,” Small said. “We have notified the Department of Housing and Urban Development of the damaged units and will work toward a plan for the unit.”

Smith offered what he considered to be the reason why local firefighters were able to respond quickly to the fire and put it out in good time.

“It’s just a credit to having a fully staffed Fire Department that we were able to respond and mitigate hazards such as this one,” he said.

In addition to local firefighters, ones from Acton, Alfred and Wells also assisted at the scene.

A neighbor, Amber Sanchez, said she is close friends with the family, whom she said is comprised of a mother, father, and four children. It was the youngest child’s birthday, she added.

The family’s dog got out of the apartment alive, Sanchez said.

How to help the family

Sanchez said the North Parish Congregational Church, which she attends, is accepting donations from anyone who wishes to help the family. The church, located at 895 Main St. in downtown Sanford, has a Free Store where donations may be brought on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to Beck Brown, the office administrator at the church, the Free Store can accept children’s clothes, small appliances, toiletries, dishes, towels, sheets, and more.

The store has enough women’s clothes at the moment, so no such donations are needed at this time, Brown said.

Donors are asked to specify that their contributions are intended for the fire victims, so that the church can contact them directly, Brown said. Any items that are donated but are not necessarily needed by the family will be kept as part of what the Free Store offers the public.

For more information, call the church at (207) 324-3163.
