While the Fourth of July is a time of celebration for many, it can be a source of anxiety for pets, according to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. The San Francisco-based organization highlighted the heightened sensitivity animals have to sound and vibrations, making fireworks particularly distressing.
“A lot of dogs cannot handle it,” said Laurie Routhier, Muttville Chief Operating Officer. “A lot of dogs, you know, get really scared. We actually see a lot of dogs and cats end up in the shelter system right after the Fourth of July because they get so scared that they want to get away, they run away because of fear and discomfort.”
The organization emphasized the importance of pet owners taking extra precautions during the holiday. Anxiety levels can vary among pets, but there are measures owners can take to ensure their animals' safety. Suggestions include playing music or white noise to mask the sound of fireworks and providing a safe space, such as a crate, for pets to retreat to.
Routhier, also recommended consulting a veterinarian for pets known to be particularly anxious. Vets may prescribe medication to help calm stressed animals. Additionally, some pet stores offer over-the-counter calming chews.
In the event a pet runs away, it is advised to immediately contact local and surrounding county shelters to report the pet as lost and share a photo. Pet owners can also upload their pet's information and photo to Petco Love Lost and local lost pet groups.
