Press release  |  Pope Memorial Humane Society – Cocheco Valley

DOVER — Five senior dogs rescued from heartbreaking and inhumane conditions in Tennessee have safely arrived at Pope Memorial Humane Society – Cocheco Valley, where they will soon be available for adoption following veterinary care and a required quarantine period.

Their journey to safety was made possible thanks to the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Pet Transport Program and the compassionate work of the Rescue Dog & End of Life Sanctuary in Tennessee.

Among the new arrivals are Squirt, Lady Bug, and Bandit, who were surrendered from a property where they endured extremely poor living conditions.
Bandit, a 12-year-old who spent his entire life chained outside with no shelter or companionship, has amazed staff with his loving and friendly personality.
His companions, Squirt and Lady Bug, werefound living inside a gutted 1960s camper without access to running water.
Despite their past, each dog is showing remarkable resilience and a hopeful spirit.

Also arriving at PMHS-CV are Sue and Sally, a bonded pair of senior dachshunds whose beloved owner tragically passed away from a sudden illness.
Understandably shy and scared upon arrival, both dogs are already beginning to relax and trust the caring staff and volunteers at the shelter.

All five dogs are not only facing the common health challenges associated with their age, but also severe dental disease.
Each will receive thorough dental cleanings and extractions to prevent infection and ensure comfort.
“Our goal is to get them happy, healthy, and comfortable as soon as possible,” said Niki D’Alessandro, animal wellness manager at PMHS-CV.

Senior dogs often face significant obstacles to adoption — especially in the South — but PMHS-CV is committed to providing these deserving dogs with a second chance at life.

“Senior dogs are frequently overlooked,” added D’Alessandro.
“We’re proud to partner with organizations that focus on giving these animals the love and dignity they deserve.”
