Numerous factors come into play when selecting a dog breed, including its look, temperament, grooming, and exercise needs. Axel Lagercrantz, CEO of the UK’s largest pet site, Pets4Homes, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about choosing a low-maintenance dog breed.

With years of experience in the pet industry, Axel said: “Low-maintenance dogs usually have short coats that don’t shed much, which means less time spent on brushing and vacuuming. They also tend to have relaxed personalities and moderate energy levels, so you won’t need to carve out hours each day for exercise.” According to Axel, there are four low-maintenance dog breeds to consider if you're looking for a new dog.

“If you’re looking for an easy-going companion, breeds like the French Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Dachshund and Greyhound are great options,” said Axel.

He elaborated: “French Bulldogs and Cavaliers are super adaptable to apartment living, and they’ll be perfectly happy with short walks and plenty of cuddle time.

“Dachshunds are small but sturdy and don’t need much grooming. Greyhounds might look like they’d need lots of exercise, but they’re actually pretty laid-back.”

Axel said greyhounds may have “a few short bursts of activity followed by long naps”.

Being an independent breed, the Greyhound is “comfortable hanging out alone for a while”.

Even though the French Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Dachshund and Greyhound are low-maintenance dog breeds, there are basic requirements all dogs need to feel happy.

Axel explained: “A balanced diet that suits your dog’s size and activity level is key.”

Daily walks, playtime, and regular vet check-ups are also paramount to keep on top of their mental and physical wellbeing.

“Puzzle toys or basic training sessions can provide mental stimulation,” said Axel. “Most importantly, giving your dog a comfy place to sleep and lots of love and attention will keep their tail wagging.”

On a final note, Axel said: “Choosing a dog that fits your lifestyle is super important.

“If you’re busy or live in a small space, a lower-energy, independent breed could be perfect.

“Sticking to a routine for feeding, walks and playtime helps your dog feel secure, and don’t forget – paying attention to their body language and cues will help you understand their needs and keep them happy.”
