HONOLULU (Island News) — The recent death of an abused pet has inspired a new event called Max's Giving Day.
Rachelle Teruya with Hina's Legacy Rescue Foundation said, “We could tell that (Max) was abused over and over again.”
Max's Giving Day honored a local dog’s memory, collecting supplies for pets in need. Donations were distributed to houseless communities across Oahu.
“He had multiple fractures, he was a senior dog, he did have kidney failure, we were trying to rehab him, we did a lot of medical care, but sadly the years and years of abuse took a toll on him and he ultimately just died,” added Teruya.
In his memory, on Saturday, December 28, 2024, the first annual Max's giving day was held at Thomas Square in Honolulu. The event was sponsored by the Hina's legacy rescue foundation which rescues dogs.
Items collected came from local individual donations, Whole Foods and the Hina's community.
Aiming to help the houseless community, hundreds of items were collected to benefit dogs as well as cats.
Teruya stated, “We drove around to the surrounding areas (today), Kaka'ako, all around King, Young, looking for houseless community members, and just trying to distribute plates, dog food, harnesses – we fit them for harnesses, the people who couldn't make it here, we get it, it's a little far to travel with all of your things, we went out to them.”
Hina's also provided hot meals at the Thomas Square collection location.
