FREEPORT, Maine — Every year, Freeport's Sparkle Celebration brings holiday cheer to the community, with local businesses offering festive activities for families.
This year, photographer Sharyn Peavey made the season even brighter by offering free pet photo sessions, capturing beloved animals alongside their families to create lasting memories.
As the holiday season gets underway, families are eager to create the perfect Christmas card, and this year, no one is being left out. Peavey, who specializes in storytelling through photography, says pets are an essential part of many families.
“Often, people's pets are a part of their story,” Peavey explained.
For pet owner Trinity Kangas, including her cats on her Christmas card was a no-brainer.
“I'm getting them printed for my mom, so she's extra excited,” Kangas said. “I love having pictures with my pets because then when they're gone, I can look at those pictures and remember what it was like to be with them.”
Peavey partnered with the Pet Pantry in Freeport to host the photo sessions, with proceeds benefiting Midcoast Humane. Peavey donated her time and talent to make the event possible.
“I'm a huge advocate of animals and the important role they play in our lives and the community,” Peavey shared. “Midcoast Humane plays a huge role in the surrounding area.”
One family that benefited from Midcoast Humane was Abby Davies and her dog, Stormy, whom she adopted seven years ago. Davies was thrilled to participate in the photo session.
“I don't think we've ever had portraits of the dogs, so it was pretty special,” Davies said.
Capturing pets isn’t always easy, but Peavey's patience and understanding of the bond between people and their animals made all the difference.
“You have to know how to corral,” Davies said with a laugh. “Especially with two dogs, it can be tricky. It was definitely cool to watch her work.”
Peavey says she finds joy in helping families celebrate their pets, especially for those whose animals are their primary companions.
“Some folks may not have children, or their kids may be grown and gone,” Peavey said. “For some, their pet is everything when they come home. That's the love they need to make their life complete, and I want to capture that for them.”
By the end of the day, Peavey had helped families create cherished keepsakes while supporting a worthy cause. Her dedication to storytelling through photography and her love for animals shone through every portrait she captured.
If you missed Sunday's photo opportunity but don't want to leave your pet out of this year's holiday card, you can reach Peavey for bookings through her website.
