FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control has partnered up with the BISSELL Pet Foundation to reduce adoption fees for animals in their care.

From May 1 to 15, FWACC will join nearly 380 shelters across 43 states in the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” event. Animals at the following locations will be included in the event:

  • 3020 Hillegas Rd.;
  • Covington Veterinary Hospital;
  • Westside Animal Hospital;
  • New Haven Pet Hospital;
  • Black Forest Cat Café;
  • Pet Supplies Plus; and
  • PetSmart stores

Adoption fees for dogs aged between 2 months and 6 years old will be set at $50 during the event, while dogs seven years and older will have their fees waived. Adopters will be able to pick their price for cats and small animals.

“Our nation’s animal shelters are facing a capacity crisis and need your help now. Adoptions have slowed while a surge in owner surrenders due to families facing economic and housing challenges has left tens of thousands of highly adoptable pets desperate to find homes,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “Our Spring National ‘Empty the Shelters’ will support the adoption of thousands of pets across the country, helping shelters in this critical time. Opening your home to a shelter pet saves a life and creates lifesaving space to help another pet in need.”

BISSELL Pet Foundation first partnered with the local shelter in 2022. However, its impact has been broad, helping more than 226,000 animals across 49 states find a home since 2016.

“We are one of many animal shelters across the country that struggle with overpopulation,” FWACC Director Amy-Jo Sites said. “Events like ‘Empty the Shelters’ from the BISSEL Pet Foundation help make a difference to our problem.”

“We know having a furry companion is a lifetime investment, and one factor can be the adoption fee; we are grateful for our partners. BISSELL Pet Foundation, who help remove that factor and help both animals and the community find each other.”
