Former North MSP Gail Ross may be out of politics now but has taken up a new voluntary position to help out the Caithness branch of Cats Protection.

Gail was the Member of the Scottish Parliament for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross from 2016 until 2021 when she decided to not seek re-election.

At a fundraising day in the Wick branch of Pets at Home, Gail was volunteering for Cats Protection alongside Caithness branch coordinator, Deirdre Campbell, and said: “I have been thinking of coming forward to help for a while but the closure of Balmore prompted me to take action.”

The Caithness branch of the feline charity has put out a call for volunteers, following the closure of the local SSPCA animal rescue centre at Balmore. It is currently looking for anyone that can help out with admin, fundraising, driving and lots of other duties, including fostering cats. Some new volunteers have already come forward and the local team is going from strength to strength.

Caithness branch coordinator Deirdre Campbell, who was with Gail at the pet shop in Wick, said: “We are delighted to welcome new volunteers to help us. It is important to have good coverage throughout the county and we are always looking for more people.

“Local volunteers will be fundraising and meeting the public in the Wick branch of Pets at Home on the Saturdays and Sundays leading up to Christmas so come along and say hello. We can answer any questions about cats or our work and offers of help are welcome!”

Gail added: “”Cats Protection does such great work in Caithness and nationally and I am happy to help out.”

For more information on Caithness Cats Protection, please email enquiries@caithness.cats.org.uk or message the Facebook page.

As well as finding new homes for unwanted and abandoned cats, the charity also offers cat care advice to the public and can help towards the cost of neutering.
