Garden-themed event urges adoption of metro shelter pets

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – As one metro area shelter prepares for kitten season, select pets are just $25 to adopt during a special garden-themed weekend-long event.

KC Pet Project says it again needs the community’s help as intake numbers continue to increase as summer approaches, along with kitten season. To help pets find loving homes, a new garden-themed adoption event took over just in time for the first weekend of May.

Between Friday, May 2, and Sunday, May 4, shelter leaders indicated that all dogs that weigh 25 lbs. or more and all adult cats will cost just $25 5o adopt during the Pick of the Patch Adoption Special. Adoptions are available at the KC Campus for Animal Care, Zona Rosa Adoption Center, Petco Adoption Center and from foster homes.

“Our shelter is filling up fast, and with the arrival of kitten season, we’re anticipating an even greater influx of pets in need,” said Abigail Anderson, Digital Media Coordinator for KC Pet Project. “This weekend’s garden-themed event gives people a fun and meaningful opportunity to find their ‘pick of the patch’ and help us make space to save more lives.”

Shelter staff noted that some pets have garden-inspired names, from flowers to fruits and vegetables, to reflect the springtime spirit of growth and renewal. Among adoptable pets is Pongo, a nearly 2-year-old pup who is ready to plant roots in a new home.

Found as a stray, volunteers said they recently spent the day out with Pongo, who is well-mannered and loves to meet new people. He enjoys group play sessions and would thrive in an active home that will include him in life’s adventures.

KC Pet Project has encouraged potential adopters to click HERE to see all available pets and head to the adoption centers over the weekend. For pets in foster homes, email to set up a meet-and-greet.

Those unable to adopt this time around can help through fostering, volunteering, donating or sharing the message.
