GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Gary non-profit that helps people in need to care for their pets is looking to expand and is looking for some assistance.
The Gary Pet Food Pantry has been operating out of two storage units since 2018.
It was started by Michelle Robinson, who runs a non-profit called cause 4 Paws after she met an elderly veteras, “who was feeding way too many cats.”
“He wasn't eating properly,” she said. “He wasn't buying all of his medications, because he was trying to buy cat food to take care of these cats, who had become endeared to him.”
The pantry now assists roughly 450 low-income families a year with dog and cat food and litter. Robinson said the pantry's growth rate is about 78 new pet owners reaching out for help every month.
The pantry is in need of warehouse space and a small fork lift.
“All of our volunteers are high mileage, so when it comes to offloading 7,500 pounds of food, it's a little bit taxing on our bodies, Robinson said.
