Globe Buddy debuts sustainable, insect-based dog food

RANDERS, DENMARK — Globe Buddy, a sustainable pet food startup, launched its new super-premium, sustainable dog food: Globe Buddy Brown. Formulated with insects, Globe Buddy Brown aligns with the company’s commitment toward sustainability and its goal to help dog parents address their pet’s environmental impact.

“We have made it easy to feed your furry friend a healthy and tasty diet while doing some good for the planet, simply by reducing the climate impact of dog food,” said Bjarne Gravesen Jensen, co-founder and chief executive officer of Globe Buddy.

Globe Buddy’s new dog food is formulated with protein from black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), which has been shown to support overall health and wellbeing in canines, especially those with sensitive digestive systems or food intolerances, according to the company.

In addition to its nutritional and health benefits, Globe Buddy Brown also boasts high environmental benefits being made with insect proteins. The formula comes with a third-party verified carbon footprint, something rarely seen in the pet food industry, according to Globe Buddy. Using insect larvae also helps advance a circular economy, as the insects feed on byproducts from the food industry, minimizing waste.

According to calculations performed by Viegand Maagøe, the carbon footprint of the ingredients used in Globe Buddy Brown is just over half that of the ingredients used in the market’s traditional dog food. Globe Buddy Brown produces just 1.6 kg of CO2e per 1 kg of the product, whereas the average dog food on the market produces 3 kg of CO2e, and premium dog food produces 7 kg of CO2e. This means that Globe Buddy’s new formula creates a 47% reduction in climate impact.

“While many companies have brought what are claimed to be green pet foods to market, we saw a need among pet-parents for increased transparency in the environmental sustainability of their dog’s food,” Jensen said. “Our brand aims to address this unmet need.”
