Pet care website Rover polled a thousand U.S. pet parents about their pet-friendly Halloween plans and what their furry friend's costume will be.

Tips for keeping pets safe, happy, and spooky during Halloween

Rover officials also included their top tips to help keep furry friends safe and reduce stress this Halloween:

  • Doorbell Training: Two-thirds (65%) of pet parents said their dog gets stressed when the doorbell rings on Halloween. Try desensitizing your pet with doorbell training exercises leading up to the big day. While only 6% of pet parents say their dog is doorbell trained, 65% are interested in learning more.
  • Costume Comfort: If you’re dressing up your pet, make sure the costume fits well and is comfortable. Avoid anything that restricts movement or vision, and always supervise them while they’re in costume.
  • Candy Caution: Keep Halloween treats out of reach! According to Rover’s survey, one in four (25%) pet parents have had a pet get into the Halloween candy. Chocolate, xylitol, and other candies can be harmful to pets. Make sure your pets can’t sneak a sweet treat.
  • Safe Spaces: With all the excitement and noise from trick-or-treaters, create a quiet, safe space for your pets. This will help them feel secure and reduce stress during the evening.
  • Identification: Ensure your pet has proper identification in case they escape during the festivities. A collar with an ID tag and a microchip can help reunite you quickly.
  • Decorative Dangers: Be mindful of decorations like candles and small items that could be choking hazards. Choose pet-safe decorations to avoid any accidents.
