LOS ANGELES — One of a dog owner's worst nightmare is to lose a beloved companion. Maybe it chased after some wildlife on a walk or maybe it escaped the backyard. Either way, the panic is something that anyone who has lost a pet can relate to.

But Casey Colvin's situation was different.

NBC correspondent Liz Kreutz started following Colvin's story when he frantically approached her as she was reporting on the wildfires in Los Angeles.

“The fire is literally on the hill where I live,” Colvin said.

When Kreutz asked him what was going through his mind, his response was immediate.

“I hope to God my dogs are OK. They're my family. I literally rescued them off the street, they deserve better than this,” Colvin said through tears.

While firefighters recovered one of Colvin's dogs, his second dog, Oreo, ran out of the house and was missing.

Days later, Kreutz reconnected with Colvin, who shared that his home had burnt down and Oreo was still missing. Despite being missing, Oreo had been spotted by several people.

On Sunday, Colvin and Kreutz went on the hunt for Oreo and to the joy of them and the internet, found the lost dog. Upon seeing Oreo, Colvin lifted the dog over his shoulder and excitedly ran around in elation and pure relief.

“I'm never going to let them go,” he said.
