A Haymarket man faces felony animal cruelty and other charges after police say he euthanized his dog Tuesday morning by shooting the pet multiple times in the Piedmont Club neighborhood.
Officers were called to the area of Verde Place and Piedmont Vista Drive at 8:47 a.m. to investigate a report of a man seen firing shots into the ground in a wooded area near the intersection.
Officers determined that a 70-year-old man was “attempting to euthanize his 16-year-old cocker-spaniel and poodle mixed dog,” Prince William County police Master Officer Renee Carr said.
“In doing so, the accused fired one round followed by several other rounds until the dog was deceased,” Carr said.
No additional injuries or property damage were reported.
Animal control officers were contacted to remove the dog from the area.
Police charged John James Ogle of Wake Crest Court with felony cruelty to animals, shooting in a public place and improper disposal of a companion animal, Carr said. He was released on personal recognizance.
