MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (KFVS) – As you look for the perfect holiday gift for your loved one, a local animal rescue is urging folks not to give pets as gifts.
St. Francis Care Animal Rescue in Murphysboro, Illinois is full of dogs and cats looking for a good home.
But founder and board president Diane Daughtery said it is important for families to know that bringing a new animal into your home this Christmas is not just another holiday gift.
It’s a life-changing commitment for your family–and the pet.
Daughtery said it is important to consider the cost, care and overall attention required if you are hoping to give a new pet a home for the holidays.
Potential pet adopters must go through a thorough background check at St. Francis before they can adopt.
Daughtery said it is all to make sure the animal is going to a good home–and not being seen as just another Christmas gift.
She said the shelter has a very strict policy against adopting animals as surprise gifts. They want to know everyone is on board and committed to being a lifelong pet parent.
That is why St. Francis ensures everyone, especially the person responsible for the new pet’s care, knows what is coming.
Daugherty said while a pet with a bow for a Christmas surprise may sound fun, it is not fair to the animal.
