Heat stroke affects dogs too, here’s how to spot it

As temperatures continue to sit in the upper nineties, dog owners are encouraged to watch for signs of heat exhaustion in their pets.

SPOKANE, Wash. — As extreme heat sweeps the U.S., dog owners are being encouraged to keep a close eye on their dogs for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Heat stroke affects dogs just as it does humans. In dogs, heat stroke occurs when the body’s normal heat dissipating systems become overwhelmed, causing the dog’s body temperature to rise above 105 degrees.

Here are some signs that may be present if your dog is suffering from heat stroke:

  • Heavy panting

  • Excessive drooling with thick saliva

  • Blue, brown, pale or red gums

  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea (which may be bloody)

  • Dog acting dazed or confused

  • Seizures

  • Stumbling, wobbly or off-balance

  • Collapse or inability to stand

  • Lethargy

Prior to these severe signs, there are some warning signs that your dog is beginning to overheat or suffering from heat exhaustion. Your dog may be looking for a cool place to lie down, panting heavily and acting tired.

If you think your dog may be showing signs of heat stroke, it is advised to wet your dog with cool water and immediately take the dog to the emergency vet. Heat stroke is a time sensitive condition and can be fatal if it goes untreated.

Keeping your dog cool during the extreme heat is important to avoid heat stroke.

Professionals say that walking your dog early in the morning or in the evening is best in order to avoid the heat of the day. They also recommend avoiding hot concrete and making sure your dog has plenty of fresh water to drink when inside and outside.
