A BBC Morning Live interview ended on a cheekier note than usual on Thursday, when viewers watched Helen George's dog partake in some self-grooming.

Fans took to Twitter to react in shock after they watched the Call the Midwife star, 39, blush in embarrassment as she watched her dog, Charlie, lick itself on her bed while conducting the interview from home.

Unable to ignore the dog's dirty antics, host Gethin Jones joked that the animal had become the show's star as they talked about Helen's latest show, The King.

He said: ‘You sure are the star of the stage, but quite frankly, Charlie has been the star of today's Morning Live.'

Helen, who donned a pink knitted jumper, gasped as she put her hand over her mouth and shouted, ‘Charlie, stop it'.

‘Yeah maybe this is a good time to say goodbye', she added as she blushed down the camera.

The theatre performer then gave Charlie some privacy as she held her out in front of the lens.

Quickly, viewers took to social media to share their reaction, with some mocking that animals would always be the star of the show.

One penned: ‘Probably wise to wrap the interview there.'

Another tweeted: ‘Pets Will Always Upstage You: Helen George edition.'

‘So funny Helen George's cute dog Charlie on Morning Live, classic!' one fan wrote while another added: ‘BBC Morning Live Charlie was very funny in that interview'.

Luckily, Gethin was quick to make light of the situation and wrap up the interview before Charlie embarrassed the star even further.

Unphased by Charlie's antics, some fans were more distracted by Helen's clothing as one fan wrote: ‘Beautiful jumper'.

Helen will return to the stage next year following The King and I's record-breaking season at The London Palladium and sell-out UK Tour.

She will reprise her role as Anna when the production returns for a limited six week run at London Palladium from January 20.

After receiving rave reviews for her performance, Helen said that she is ‘delighted' to be able to continue in the show and playing on the West End will be ‘an honour.'

Set in 1860s Bangkok, The King and I tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher.

Helen plays the British schoolteacher who is hired by the King of Siam to educate his many wives and children.

The King And I is one of the best-loved musicals of all time, crammed with huge show tunes including Shall We Dance? and Getting To Know You.

The Daily Mail gave the production a glowing review saying: ‘We left the London Palladium on a bright cloud of music – joyous!'

One of Helen's friends who will no doubt be keen for a ticket is her Call The Midwife co-star Olly Rix after they sparked rumours of a growing connection following their recent breakups.

Helen and Olly are said to be supporting each other as they navigate through their heartbreak.

The actors are known for their roles as on-screen married couple Trixie Franklin and Matthew Aylward in BBC drama, Call The Midwife.

Morning Live airs weekdays from 9.15am on BBC One.
