Help Soldiers Get Their Rescued Pups for Mother’s Day and America During National Military Appreciation Month

Paws of War is on a mission to help get seven rescued dogs to America safely

NESCONSET, New York – (May 10, 2024) – May is National Military Appreciation Month, as well as Mother’s Day, making it a great time to help support the latest mission by Paws of War. The organization, dedicated to helping veterans and rescued animals, is working hard to get a mother Husky and her six puppies to America, where they will live out their lives with the soldiers who adopted them while stationed overseas. It is a costly mission, but Paws of War believes they can be successful with the support of people in the community.

“This Mother’s Day mission will be expensive but will also require a lot of time and planning to carry out,” said Robert Misseri, the co-founder of Paws of War. “We want to support our soldiers and show our appreciation for them, so we will make it happen. We invite others to show their appreciation this month by supporting this mission.”

When Army National Guard Specialist Andrew first encountered the beautiful Husky he named Skadi, she was not in good condition. She was in the freezing cold, weak, starving, and desperately in need of care. Stationed overseas on his first deployment, he immediately went into action to help her. While she was afraid of everyone, she warmed up to him quickly, and the two formed a lasting bond. 

Not long after bringing Skadi into the base, he realized she was pregnant. There was no way she would survive giving birth to the puppies on her own in the harsh outdoor conditions, and he knew they didn’t have the resources she needed at the base to help her properly. That’s when Spc. Andrew reached out to Paws of War in a desperate attempt for help. They responded by dispatching a rescue team to help her give birth to her six puppies, each of which has been adopted by Spc. Andrew’s fellow soldiers.

The Paws of War team has given Skadi and her puppies the care they need to survive and thrive. The next leg of their rescue mission is to get the dogs all moved to America, where they will live with soldiers who adopted them. The journey takes planning and is costly, covering airfare, food, shelter, veterinary care, and everything the dogs may need. Due to international law, the puppies cannot make the journey until they are six months old, so the groundwork is currently being laid for the move that will occur as soon as they are.

“We are so thankful to Paws of War and everyone helping to get this family to safety. They are special to us, and the thought that Skadi can make it out of here and to safety in the U.S. where I can give her everything she deserves fills me with hope,” said Spc. Andrew. “Members of my unit have rallied, and we have forever homes for each of Skadi’s puppies, too, but we can’t save them ourselves. If they can make it to America, they won’t ever have to suffer again, and we can give them safe and happy lives.”
