TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Helping Hands Humane Society, overwhelmed after taking in nearly 400 animals in just 20 days, is offering free dog adoptions starting Wednesday, May 21.
The animal shelter’s offer is part of its plea for urgent help from the community.
According to its Facebook page, the shelter’s kennels are full, and staff and volunteers are caring for animals in crates, playpens and social rooms wherever they can find space.
Helping Hands officials say this isn’t just a shelter issue, it’s a community crisis, and they need people to step up by adopting, fostering, volunteering or donating.
If you’re missing a pet, the shelter urges you to come in person as soon as possible to file a lost report and show photos. If you can’t come in person, call, email, or file a report online.
If you’ve found a healthy pet, please check with neighbors, post on lost and found pages, and check for a microchip at Helping Hands, Gage Dog Park or the SENT location in Hi-Crest.
In addition to free dog adoptions starting May 21st and foster-to-adopt and temporary fostering options are also available to help free up space.
Volunteers are needed to help with cleaning, walking and socializing the animals, and donations are critical to cover the daily cost of care.
Helping Hands Humane Society is located at 5720 S.W. 21st St. in Topeka and is open from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
