When single mom Tia and her 76-year-old father embarked on a hike last July, they had no inkling of the life-changing encounter that lay ahead. The pair had been trekking the mountain trails for about three hours, basking in the natural beauty and the sense of accomplishment that comes from reaching the summit. Their descent, however, took an unexpected turn when they came across a severely injured Springer Spaniel. The dog’s condition was dire, and with no owners in sight, the situation demanded immediate and decisive action from Tia.
The dog was in critical condition, clearly having suffered significant trauma, and there was no sign of his owners anywhere nearby. It was a situation that demanded immediate action. Tia, with her compassionate heart, realized that if they left the dog there, his chances of survival were slim to none. Without hesitation, she made the courageous decision to rescue the distressed animal.
In an extraordinary act of kindness and bravery, Tia lifted the 55-pound dog into her arms. The journey ahead was daunting, but Tia was determined to carry the dog to safety. Her remarkable story has since resonated with people around the world, showcasing the incredible lengths one person can go to save a life.
Tia shared her inspiring experience during an interview on Pickler and Ben’s YouTube channel, which has since amassed over 61,000 views. In the interview, she vividly described the series of events that led to the rescue and the challenges she faced along the way.
“The dog was with another family who had found him,” Tia recalled. “They asked if he was my dog, and I said no. The family was at a loss about what to do, as they had young children with them who were inexperienced hikers.”
The family, unable to take the injured dog with them, looked to Tia for a solution. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Tia knew she had to act. The dog, who she later learned was named Boomer, was in no condition to walk down the mountain on his own. So, Tia made the decision to carry the 55-pound spaniel herself, embarking on a six-mile journey that would test her strength and resolve.
“We came together and decided that I would carry him down and seek help,” Tia explained. “Boomer was pretty beat up and couldn’t walk. At that time, I had no idea how long he had been out there. For all I knew, it could have been days.”
The trek back to civilization was grueling. Tia, a gymnast with strong quads, found the physical challenge immense. The weight of the dog, combined with the rough terrain and the length of the hike, made the task incredibly difficult. At one point, overwhelmed by exhaustion, Tia remembers praying for assistance.
“I took lots of breaks in between hiking,” she said. “After sending up a prayer, I felt a ‘divine intervention’ that made Boomer’s weight feel lighter.”
Despite the physical and emotional toll, Tia’s determination never wavered. Her perseverance paid off when she finally reached the base of the mountain, where Boomer’s story began to unfold.
It turned out that Boomer had been hiking with his owners when tragedy struck. He had ventured onto a snow-covered crevice and slipped, falling from a 100-foot cliff and rolling an additional 200 feet. Boomer’s owners, frantic with worry, had rushed down the mountain to find him, but by the time they reached the bottom, Boomer was nowhere to be seen.
They searched tirelessly until nightfall, fearing the worst—that Boomer had crawled into a bush to die. Heartbroken and exhausted, they eventually had to abandon their search.
Tia learned that Boomer’s owners were in the process of moving to Arizona, and this hike was intended to be a final adventure with Boomer before he was handed over to his new owners. The thought of Boomer, injured and alone, weighed heavily on Tia’s heart.
“It tugged at my heartstrings all night, and when I woke up the next day, my first thought was, ‘that dog’s supposed to be mine,’” she said.
Sign Petition Today: No more puppy mills!
Missouri is already referred to as the “puppy mill capital” of the country, and a new bill would make it harder for counties and cities to protect dogs from the cruelty of puppy mills.
Moved by her connection to Boomer and her determination to give him a better life, Tia reached out to Boomer’s owners. After heartfelt discussions, it was decided that Boomer would stay with Tia. Although he still requires surgery to repair his bones, Boomer is already showing signs of recovery and adapting to his new home.
Tia’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person’s kindness and determination can have. Her selfless act of carrying Boomer for six hours through challenging terrain not only saved his life but also brought joy and inspiration to countless others. Boomer’s journey from a tragic fall to finding a loving new home is a testament to the resilience of both animals and the humans who care for them.
