With summer fast approaching, many pet parents are planning their holiday weekends at the lake. If you’re lucky enough to have a dog that loves the water and the great outdoors, bringing them along can make your getaway even more memorable. But a fun lake trip takes a little extra planning when your four-legged companion is coming too.

Here’s how to make the most of your lake weekend with your dog, plus a handy checklist to ensure you don’t forget the essentials.

Why Take Your Dog to the Lake? Most dogs love new sights, sounds, and smells—and the lake is a paradise of all three. Swimming, hiking, boating, and simply relaxing in nature are just as enjoyable for dogs as they are for humans. Plus, the bonding time away from daily routines is good for both of you.

That said, lakes can pose a few risks: sharp rocks, strong currents, blue-green algae, or hot surfaces can all be hazards. That’s why it’s important to plan ahead and pack properly.

Lake Trip Dog Checklist

Essentials: Collar with ID tag (and microchip info up to date), leash (plus a long leash or tether for lakeside lounging), harness (safer than a collar for hiking or boating), fresh water and portable water bowl, dog food and treats (don’t forget a travel container!), and waste bags (always clean up after your pet).

Health & Safety: Dog life jacket (especially for smaller or older dogs, or in deep water), pet first aid kit, flea/tick prevention (lakeside areas can be buggy), sunscreen for dogs (yes, they can burn too—especially light-colored or short-haired breeds), and a towel (for drying off or warming up after a swim).

Comfort & Fun: Dog bed or mat (for relaxing at camp or in the cabin), shade (pop-up tent or beach umbrella if there’s no natural cover), toys (especially floating toys for water play), blanket or extra layers for chilly evenings, and crate or car harness (for safe travel).

Tips for a Safe and Happy Lake Weekend: Test the waters. Make sure your dog is comfortable in water before letting them swim far. Check the weather. Hot pavement or docks can burn paw pads; cool breaks and hydration are key. Watch for wildlife. Snakes, raccoons, and other animals may be present—always keep your dog under supervision. Know the rules. Check local regulations to see if dogs are allowed off-leash or on the beach. Leave no trace. Keep the area clean for others and local wildlife.

Final Thought: Your dog is part of the family—and they’ll love being included in your lake adventure. With a little preparation, you’ll both have a fun, safe, and tail-wagging good time.

Have a great holiday weekend!
