PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — Firefighters have contained a fast-moving fire that left someone hurt near Peoria Thursday morning. Several pets are also missing.
According to Rural Metro firefighters, the blaze started around 9:30 a.m. as a barbecue fire outside spread to the home near 88th Avenue and Williams Road. The house is located on a county island surrounded by Peoria.
Crews from Peoria Fire-Medical were first on the scene as the fire was quickly spreading through the home. Officials say fire hydrants are scarce in that area, and extended hoses were used to bring water.
Because of the water delay, Peoria firefighters took a defensive position and called for a first-alarm response. The blaze was later upgraded to a second-alarm response, with additional firefighters and resources from other agencies requested to battle the flames.
The fire was brought under control later in the morning.
According to Peoria Fire-Medical, the fire started due to a “malfunction” with a barbecue grill. The homeowner suffered burns to his hand while trying to extinguish the fire as it began spreading toward the home.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
No one else was hurt, but fire officials say five dogs are missing.
In addition to Rural Metro and Peoria, firefighters from Arizona Fire & Medical Authority, Glendale, Phoenix and Sun City also responded.
