The fire broke out on April 12 at around 10:33 a.m. While the residents managed to escape safely after seeing smoke from the kitchen, their pets were trapped inside. As flames and smoke filled the home, they could only hope help would arrive in time.

The New Orleans Fire Department reached the scene just five minutes after the emergency call. Smoke and fire were already spreading from the back of the house to the attic. Firefighters rushed inside to battle the blaze and search for the animals.
One dog was saved. But the second, sadly, did not make it. Found in the kitchen, the dog had perished before help could arrive.
Seventeen fire units and forty-three firefighters worked hard to bring the fire under control by 11:12 a.m. Thankfully, no people were hurt. The cause of the fire is still being looked into.
