How to Celebrate National Bond With Your Dog Day With The Hawaiian Humane Society

Honolulu (KHON2) – The Hawaiian Humane Society believes every day is National Bond with Your Dog Day, and you should be demonstrating that every day because dogs are beloved members families.

Those looking to adopt from the Hawaiian Humane Society or a local rescue organization where many more dogs are waiting for loving homes at either the Hawaiian Humane’s Mōʻiliʻili Campus and Kosasa Family Campus at Hoʻopili in ʻEwa Beach.

“We’re participating in BISSELL Pet Foundation Empty the Shelters nationwide adoption event now through May 15, waiving adoption fees for adult dogs and cats one year of age and older. We hope that will incentivize our incredible adoptable pets finding loving homes so that we can truly clear the shelters,” says Brandy Shimabukuro, Manager of Communications at The Hawaiian Humane Society.

According to Shimabukuro, there are 3 tips to keep in mind when caring for your dogs

Quality time: Quality time could come in the form of exercise, enrichment or – everyone’s favorite – cuddles! For social dogs, treat them to a field trip to their favorite dog-friendly place, whether that’s to their favorite park, beach or restaurant. Certain businesses even have specialty “pup” menus for your four-legged friends!

Mental stimulation: Remember that active mental stimulation that strengthens their minds and bodies is equally important to doing strenuous physical exercise. Even senior dogs can benefit from a leisurely stroll that allows them to smell and explore – we call these “sniffaris.” A 15-minute sniffari can be just as tiresome as an hour of active vigorous exercise like running because it allows your dog to engage with their environment.

Special treats: It’s important to feed your pets species-specific, nutritious diets, and there’s no better way to show your love for your pet through food. Giving them their favorite treats in moderation from time to time and incorporating activities into it are key. For dogs, giving them a homemade “pupsicle” with dog-safe foods like peanut butter, unsweetened, plain greek yogurt, shredded carrots and mashed bananas is a great special treat while also occupying their attention for a while.
