How to keep pets entertained during rain and wet, bad weather | Tips from Dr Katrina Warren

Pets can get antsy staying indoors during wet weather, so vet Dr Katrina Warren has compiled a bunch of tips to help your pet enjoy those rainy days inside.

She says rainy days are the perfect opportunity to get your dog up to date with some short training sessions.

“Training actually tires dogs out, so it gives them a mental workout and you'll find they're more likely to chill out and sleep.”

“Physical exercise prevents boredom, reducing the likelihood of destructive behaviours, and regular exercise helps burn off excess energy, leading to a calmer and more content dog,” she says.

Rain and thunder can also give dogs some anxiety, so giving your dog a safe toy to chew will keep them occupied and help them to relax, says the pet expert.

Warren also suggests making it enjoyable for both of you by playong “fun games that you both enjoy” with games like “Hide it”, “Find a toy”, and even modified fetch in the corridor.

“Anything to get your dog moving,” she says.

Another great tool to use is a puzzle toy.

“There are lots of toys on the market where your dog has to actually use his brain to figure out how get the treats out,” Warren says.

You can also set up an indoor adventure for your pup in the form of a treasure hunt.

Warren says she'll use some of her dog Chilli's regular dry food and some treats to make a ‘hunt' around the house: “That keeps him occupied for quite a long period of time.”
