The Humane Society in Elkhart County has multiplied its food pantry times 10 over the last 3 years.

The goal is to help other pet owners provide food for their animals through donations from the community.

The holidays are a busy time for everyone.

And for the animals and workers in the Humane Society in Elkhart County, now is the busiest time of the year.

The Humane Society has grown its pet food pantry program to help families have access to pet food.

And hopefully lead to more adoptions.

“typically food that comes donated to the shelter comes to the pet food pantry. We always need more like I said those numbers are just huge multiple times a day. People are coming in for the pet food pantry so the most food we have the more pets we can keep in their living homes and out of the shelter.” said Maria Waltersdorf, Humane Society Elkhart County Community Development Manager.”

The Humane Society is asking for more donations of pet food to keep up with the growing need for its food pantry.

“Through November over 2000 pets of gotten pet food through our pet food pantry in 2023 we had 1011 pets in 2022 there were 240, so the growth has been truly exponential.” said Maria Waltersdorf, Humane Society Elkhart County Community Development Manager.”

And with a chance of fireworks on New Year's Eve throughout the area, those with the Humane Society say, make sure your dogs have a collar with their name and number in case your pets get out.

Waltersdorf said, this night is a night to make sure your pets are supervised.

“If its going outside, making sure it is supervised or even on a leash. Even if you have a fenced in backyard, so important especially this time of the year where they might be fireworks.” said Maria Waltersdorf, Humane Society Elkhart County Community Development Manager.”
