HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Huntsville Animal Services teamed up with several local businesses and veterinarians Saturday to provide low-cost and no-cost care to families in need.

There were check-ups being done, shots given, flea and tick treatments and food assistance available. But the top priority was spaying and neutering.

“We wanted to do this for the community because there’s so many people without access to cheap spay and neuter, and we really need to see less pets in our shelter.” said Riley Ferrerr, the program coordinator for Huntsville Animal Services. Spring is right around the corner and that usually brings a flood of unwanted puppies and kittens to the shelters. On Friday, HAS announced those shelters were full, and they were offering a $14 deal for dog adoption that covered initial medical needs.

“There’s just so many people who can’t afford it, so we want to help them out as much as possible.” Ferrerr said. “That’s another reason people surrender their pets to the shelter, they can’t afford basic vet care, so we want to offer that and help bridge that gap.”

Ferrerr also pointed out the new Huntsville Animal Services food pantry which helps low income families keep their animals full and happy.
