Vigilant dog owners who have kept chocolate, raisins and avocado away from their pets should add another toxic item to the list: cannabis edibles. The increasingly popular “gummies” — cannabis-infused sweets — are thought to have contributed to a rise in the number of dogs being poisoned by marijuana.
According to the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS), more than 450 dogs have been treated in the UK over the past four years, including 119 last year, compared with 82 in 2020.
Nicola Robinson, the VPIS head of service, told The Mail on Sunday that these figures could under-report the problem: “Not all animal poisoning cases are reported to us, so these are not a completely accurate representation of numbers,” she said.
The RSPCA warns that
