A neighbourhood in the Indian city of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh was left terrorised on August 14 as a rabid dog went on a biting spree and made more than a dozen people its prey within an hour.
CCTV footage showed the dog brutally attacking a 22-year-old student, who had to be hospitalised later.
Ashish Yadav, from the Awas Vikas Colony, was strolling outside his home talking over the phone when he was suddenly attacked by a dog in the night, at 9:45 pm (local time). In no time, the dog launched its attack, leaving Yadav with no option but to throw his kicks and punches.
The dog runs away, but only after severely injuring Yadav and biting him in the face. Ashish could be seen bleeding from the mouth, eyes and lips in the footage.
The dog later attacks a woman, who was standing at the gate of her house. It attacked the woman’s legs and knees, prompting her to seek urgent medical care and requiring several stitches.
Then, the dog attacks two girls playing outside their home.
Within an hour, the dog made 17 people its prey.
NDTV reported that when Ashish Yadav’s father took him to the local government hospital, it didn’t have the required shot.
The local residents have reportedly raised the matter with the municipal corporation about the dog attacks many times in the past but no action has been taken.
However, Gorakhpur’s Additional Municipal Commissioner Durgesh Mishra denied having received any such report.
“We regularly run a campaign for sterilization of stray dogs. An Animal Birth Control Center is also being built. Stray dogs are being caught and sterilized and we run awareness campaigns for vaccination for pet dogs,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.
