Indiana Gov. Holcomb, family dedicate Madison Correctional Facility’s ADOPT unit to late dog Henry | News from WDRB

MADISON, Ind. (WDRB) — Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and first lady Janet Holcomb are honoring the late first dog, Henry, through a program helping animals in need.

Thursday, the first family dedicated the Madison Correctional Facility's ADOPT unit in honor of their dog Henry, who passed away last December.

ADOPT stands for “a dog on prison turf.” The program allows inmates to help care for and train animals in a safe environment in hopes of finding them a new home.

“To be able to learn from each other and to be able to have a second chance to find real purpose and meaning,” Holcomb said. “And just to see the glow, that is occurring both, again, on the cutest puppies in the world's faces, but also on those who are paying back their debt to society. And this is a correctional facility, and I can't think of a better course correction in life than what occurs right there, right under these beautiful trees.”

The goal is to give animals at risk of being euthanized the chance to be adopted, providing a second chance for pets and offenders. The program takes in dogs and cats with behavioral problems that may otherwise be euthanized.
