DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) -Not everyone in the Quad Cities had a festive Fourth of July this year with firework injuries, polices calls and lost pets.
At least 6 people were treated at metro hospitals for fireworks related injuries, 5 at Unity Point and 1 at Genesis. These injuries are just a fraction of the 9,700 people treated for fireworks injuries in ERs last year according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Of the injuries, 42% were burns according to the Commission, while the most commonly inquired body parts were a person’s head or eyes. Injuries to hands and fingers made up 35% of injuries.
Last July, 34 hospitals and facilities in Illinois reported 108 fireworks injuries according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s 2023 Seasonal Fireworks Injury report. According to the report, almost 50% of injuries were to hands, torsos and eyes.
Local polices departments also had busy nights. The Davenport Police Department received 58 calls about fireworks starting at 10 p.m., when the city’s fireworks code expires. City code allows the use of consumer fireworks on July 3rd and 4th, from 5 to 10 p.m.
In Bettendorf, consumer fireworks can be used from 2 to 11 p.m. on July 3rd and 4th. The city’s police department said they got 24 fireworks complaints Thursday and that 22 of those complaints were about fireworks either outside allotted hours or in a prohibited location. The department said they had no reports of injuries.
In Illinois, the sale, possession and use of all consumer fireworks is banned. The Rock Island Police Department said it responded to 39 fireworks complaints between July 3rd and 4th. The department said it had no reports of firework injuries.
Rock Island Animal Control said it had five dogs come in overnight, and by Friday morning 2 had been picked up. King’s Harvest Pet Rescue in Davenport said they had not gotten any calls about lost pets or had any animals come in as of Friday morning.
