Innovation with a smile: Meet Szeged’s first robot waiter at Szálka Fish Tavern!

Szeged’s hospitality scene has welcomed a truly special new addition: the first robot waiter has arrived at the Szálka Fish Tavern. However, before anyone envisions a future straight out of a science fiction film, it is worth clarifying that this is not a revolutionary change in the workforce, but rather an innovation with entertainment and marketing value. The robot is a friendly, attention-grabbing addition that livens up the atmosphere for guests, rather than working in place of the waiters.

Richárd Róvó, owner of the Szálka Fish Tavern, explained in an interview with DélMagyar that the introduction of a robot waiter was a carefully considered decision, not a mere impulse. Inspired by international examples, they decided to try something new themselves. The aim was not to replace staff but to add colour to the restaurant experience. Customers—especially families and children—love the little machine, which entertains diners with cheerful messages at their tables.

What does (and doesn’t) the robot waiter do?

The robot is primarily used to carry small objects and drinks. If you think this new colleague significantly reduces the need for human labour, you would be mistaken. In fact, with a touch of irony, the owner notes that it almost needs another person to operate and supervise it. Thus, the multi-million forint investment is more about enhancing the guest experience than cutting costs.

Although the robot can deliver drinks, traditional restaurant meals such as soups remain the responsibility of the human servers. According to the owner, personal service is essential in restaurants of Szálka’s quality. The aim is not to have guests fetch their own plates; rather, the robot complements the human touch without replacing it, adding vibrancy to the dining experience.

The robot waiter’s greatest strength is clearly the way it interacts with guests. Children adore it—often even giving it a name—and eagerly follow its every move. This kind of interaction is a huge plus for a family- and pet-friendly restaurant. The robot not only entertains but also creates a real sense of community, something increasingly valued today.

The robot’s job at Szálka Fish Tavern

Although many might see the robot waiter as a sign of an impending technological revolution, in reality, it is more of a creative splash of colour in today’s hospitality industry. For now, there is no talk of machines taking over restaurant service—and perhaps that is not the goal. At the Szálka Fish Tavern, the robot’s most important task is simply to put a smile on guests’ faces and brighten the mealtime atmosphere—and sometimes that is exactly what is needed for a memorable dining experience.
