It seems like every day on social media, there are countless posts about pets that have gotten lost. You might not think your pet will wander off until they do, and the big question is, does your pet have a chip?
The microchip technology that allows a lost pet to be reunited with their family because a small piece of plastic and other components can tell someone something your pet can't is priceless. June is National Microchip Month, so if your pets are not chipped, this is the time to be thinking about it. Many area veterinarians and shelters are promoting getting pets chipped.

Chances are, if you adopted a pet from a shelter, it may already have a chip. It is common for rescues to chip their animals so that if anything happens, the authorities can at least reach out to the rescue for more information.
As a matter of fact, there was a story a few years back about a dog that had been adopted from Pet Alive in Middletown being found because of the chip. It turns out the dog had been on the loose for a while, and no one knows what happened to the owner. The dog ended up in good care back at Pets Alive because of the chip. Otherwise, the dog would have gone to the nearest shelter, possibly to never be found.
So, as the Ulster County SPCA says, why take the chance? Get your pet chipped so that if the day comes that they wander off, it will be easy for someone to contact you when they are found. It is time to get a chip, and yes, if you have a chip, get it checked.
If the thought of owning a dog or a cat or a parakeet sounds nice and all but you’re looking for an animal that’s a little more exotic, five super cute exotic animals appear to be completely legal to own in New York, although you might want to check your local ordinance laws to be sure.
