Journalist Kate Spicer claimed it is ‘beneficial for our own microbiome' but impressionist Francine Lewis disagreed saying dogs carry ‘dangerous diseases'.

The debate comes after Nicola Peltz Beckham shared a snap kissing her Chihuahua Nala on the mouth which divided the internet.

Kate said: ‘There is something called the old friends hypothesis, which is basically about how we evolved wit dogs and we are reliant on the 600 bacteria in their mouth to keep our own microbiomes healthy. In a way kissing your dog could be like taking a probiotic.'

Francine added: ‘Dogs tongues carry lots of parasites and lots of viruses and dangerous diseases, so there is no way it can be healthy for a dog to be licking you.

‘You can show your dog so much more love by tickling his belly, giving him a cuddle, snuggling up to him but you don't need to let him lick you.'

The actress admitted that she trained her dog to not lick herself or her children, she added: ‘That to me is absolutely gross.'

Kate argued that numerous studies have proven that children that grow up on farms and with animals have much better ‘immunity' and ‘less likely to have asthma' than children who don't have pets.

Francine argued: ‘Can I just say my dog is constantly licking his genitals, there is no way then he is going to lick my face.'

Kate added: ‘My dogs do way worse then lick their own bums, they are really fascinated by poo on the street, I give them a bath and a day or two later I will give them a kiss on the forehead, I'm thinking fox poo, I'm thinking I love my dogs.'

One person said: ‘She's not the first person to kiss a dog. Certainly won't be the last. To my knowledge, no-one has died!'

Another said: ‘Yes I've been doing it for 35 years. Nothing has ever ever happened to me. Stop trying to nanny state.'

Someone else wrote: ‘This is disgusting! The mere suggestion of it makes me feel really sick. I wouldn't do this if my life depended on it.'

A fourth said: ‘Animals are part of the family but kissing them in a certain way not happening x'

It comes after Nicola, 29, shared a snap of herself smooching her pup and revealed she was left devastated when Nala passed away shortly after being groomed by HoundSpa employee Jony Ceballos.

The actress has now launched a lawsuit against Ceballos, HoundSpa LLC, and owner Deborah Gittleman at the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of Westchester.
