Many homes in Alberta don't have air conditioning, so it's important to find ways to keep your canine friend happy on those hot days

Many homes in Alberta don't have air conditioning, especially older homes, so it's important to keep dogs cool in those hot summer months.

Make sure your dog has access to plenty of cold water. Frozen treats are also a great way for your pets to cool off. A frozen Kong with their preferred treat or some of their dog food inside a bowl of frozen water are some ideas on how to keep them cool while entertained.

If your house or apartment suite does not have air conditioning, it's a good idea to keep a fan going in your home.

It is also recommended to give your pet access to the coolest parts of your home, such as your basement, and closing the blinds or curtains to limit direct sunlight.

One thing to avoid in the hot weather are crates, as they need space to move around, along with access to cold water. Putting them in a crate for any period of time can lead to heatstroke.

Some things to do if your dog is suffering from heatstroke are moving to a cool or shaded area, and placing a direct fan on him/her, begin to cool their body by placing cool, wet towels over the back of their neck, armpits and in the groin area, wet their ear flaps and paws with cold water and transport to a vet clinic immediately.

Some things not to do include forcing water into them, but instead making sure its available if they show interest in drinking, not over-cooling them and not leaving them unattended for any length of time.
