BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Aggieland Humane Society says they receive an influx of lost pets after fireworks celebrations every year, and right now is the best time to take steps to prevent your pet from ending up on their lost and found page.
They suggest double checking exits in your home and yard to prevent any escape attempts, keeping ID tags up to date with accurate information and minimizing firework noise by running a fan or white noise machine as a distraction.
Executive Director Katrina Ross says she plans ahead on the day with her own pets to reduce the amount of time spent outside for walks or potty breaks. She also says she keeps anti anxiety medication on hand for situations that involve fireworks.
She also says even if your dog isn’t nervous it might be best to leave them at home and indoors, in case of sudden loud noises.
“Even if your pet is bomb proof I would still leave them at home because you never know,” Ross said. “You don’t want to drop their leash and then they manage to get away from you so just keep them at home.”
If your pet does escape, Ross says not to panic and call Aggieland Humane to file a lost pet report, or check that the shelter hasn’t listed them on the shelter’s lost and found page here.
