LA CRESCENT, Minn. – (WXOW) – Recent statistics show around 65% of pets in the United States are overweight.
It's a health problem that can lead to other health issues. Those health concerns include an increased change of heart issues, kidney disease and arthritis.
Making simple adjustments to your pet's eating routine can make the difference in helping them lose the weight.
“A good way to cut back on the food is lessening the amount by 25%,” said Kiri Dorn, a veterinarian technician with La Crescent Animal Care. “It makes it less noticeable for them and easier for you to measure their intake, a slow cut down.”
It's also noted that table scraps can add to the weight in an unhealthy way as is the same for too many treats.
Exercise like walking your dog can be more challenging in the winter months. However, you can keep pets busy by playing fetch indoors.
