TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — For people, the 4th of July is a visual wonderland, but for a lot of our four legged friends…

“With a lot of the bangs and pops it scares animals, it causes them to flee,” said Colton Jones of Tulsa Animal Welfare.

Tulsa Animal Welfare, bracing themselves for the annual influx of fireworks runaways.

“Normally we do see an increase in our intakes,” he said.

Another danger for dogs this time of year, the heat.

“If your feet are hot, their feet are hot, do not let your animals walk on this hot pavement. If it’s 90 degree out it’s 140 on their feet,” said Jan Lavender of Oklahoma Alliance for Animals.

For folks who leave their dogs outside?

“You have to change the water every couple of hours, you know they need to have constant water otherwise their systems will shut down from the heat,” she said.

Meanwhile, over at Decopolis, home of dinosaurs, skeletons, and an octopus…

“Daisy, come here,” said William Franklin, talking to his shop dog Daisy Diggs.

“A lot of people come in just to see her,” he said.

William says when it comes to fireworks…

“If there’s going to be something like that with the fireworks we make sure she’s near us, around us,” he said.

And as far as the heat goes…

“Even when I come into the store if it’s too hot I’ll pick her up and carry her especially her since she’s so low to the ground,” he said.

Keeping your best friends safe on the 4th both from the heat and the noise.

“If everybody can please make sure that your animals have a collar, a tag, rabies tag, some form of identification on them,” said Jones.
