Thrissur: Kerala's first ultra-modern electric crematorium for animals will soon become a reality in Thrissur, providing a much-needed facility for pet owners.

Located on Thrissur Corporation land in Kuriachira, the crematorium is being established at a cost of around Rs 2 crore in collaboration with the Suchitwa Mission project.

The crematorium offers a range of unique services, including the collection of pet ashes and specially prepared walls where photos of pets can be displayed.
Flowers can also be offered in memory of the beloved animals.

While the facility caters to all animals except elephants, it particularly benefits pet owners living in flats or those without access to proper burial grounds.

It also provides a dignified solution for stray dogs and cats, ensuring they are not left to decay in public spaces.

This project addresses long-standing concerns from pet owners in Kerala, who have previously highlighted the lack of proper facilities for the burial of deceased pets.
The crematorium's opening comes in the wake of a sharp increase in pet ownership in the state post-Covid, with a noticeable rise in the number of lap dogs and other pets.

Neighbouring states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have long offered animal crematoriums and related services, including private cremation, specialised mortuaries, and personalised burial markers made of marble and granite.
With this new facility, Kerala joins the ranks of states providing dedicated cremation services for pets, marking a significant step forward in animal care and welfare in the state.
