A LOT of cats and kittens are homed by us annually but our older cats are often overlooked in favour of the younger kittens. With this in mind, our cat team has introduced a new scheme called ‘senior saviour’ targeted at people over 65 years of age who would like to give an older cat a home.
When you become a ‘senior saviour,’ you are adopting an older cat that is quiet and settled and just wants food, love and a warm home. You take care of the day-to-day running costs like food, litter and flea/worm doses when needed, but the benefit of this scheme is that we look after the bigger stuff such as veterinary fees. We will also provide a home for the adopted cat should you be unable to care for it through illness or any other event where the cat needs to be surrendered.
Not every cat is suitable, so we keep a waiting list for people who are interested in becoming a ‘senior saviour.’ If you wish to be considered, then text SS65 to 089 4588162 for more details. In our experience, lurchers and greyhounds make wonderful pets, yet they are often passed over for potential homes in favour of the cute and cuddly breeds. Those who adopt them are always extolling their virtues and are grateful that they were guided towards these wonderful pets.
They do not require hours of walking or entertaining but are fairly lazy for the most part and are happy with one good walk/run a day and a comfortable couch thereafter. We completed a wonderful double adoption at our recent Punchestown dog walk when Bonnie and Kellie, who had become firm friends during their time at the shelter, went off together to their forever home and will now keep each other entertained and exercised forever more.
We have plenty more and, in fact, there is never a time when we are without lurchers at the shelter, so perhaps you might consider one in the future if adopting. You won’t be disappointed.
