Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O' Henderson has weighed in on a local Italian government's controversial method of catching dog owners who don't pick up their pooch's poo.

Last week, the northern Italian province of Bolanzo announced that dog owners must present their pets for DNA testing, so that genetic testing can be used to identify owners responsible for uncollected poo.

Owners that are traced down by the DNA will face fines of up to €1000 (AUD $1,650).

While the rule has sparked plenty of backlash among locals, Jackie expressed her full support during a segment on Wednesday's radio show.

‘I love it! That's genius!' exclaimed Jackie, who owns a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel cross poodle.

Kyle had some reservations, however, noting that police stations ‘can't even process rape kits', let alone dog DNA tests.

‘But it only takes a few,' Jackie replied, adding: ‘You know, they don't have to do them all. It's like, you know, the speed cameras, they don't get everyone.'

‘They don't always work, but because we know it's a possibility we obey that rule,' she explained.

DNA registration will become compulsory for all Bolanzo residents from around late March.

Dog owners are also required to pay for the initial DNA test themselves, with prices costing between €65 and €100 (AUD $107 – $165).

‘Bolzano receives a few hundred complaints a year from citizens about improper management of public land. More than half are for dogs,' veterinary department director Paolo Zambotto told Reuters.

‘Law enforcement could only catch three or four of them because they have to go there and set up some kind of stakeout.'
