PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — A Laveen neighborhood is working together to save a pack of dogs they believe were abandoned in their area.

“We’re doing all we can to help these dogs,” said Yesenia Gallardo, who initially found the dogs.

She noticed four dogs huddled together toward the beginning of her hike near a trail on the west side of South Mountain over the weekend.

After asking around the neighborhood, she said no one claimed the pups. She noticed they were all in rough shape.

“I went and got some dog food, and I fed them and gave them water. They were really hungry, they were starving,” Gallardo said.

Along with her neighbors and the help of a local rescue, they all worked together to trap the dogs. They are now temporarily living with one of Gallardo’s neighbors.

“It’s just really sad because there’s no food and water there’s (sic) predators. They could have died,” she said.

One neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, claims they may have caught the dogs being abandoned on surveillance video. In it, you can see a car stop for a while and eventually drive away with what appears to be a pack of dogs running behind it.

This story is something the Arizona Humane Society says they hear more of and it’s pet abandonment. And they say there is no main reason why people are doing it.

“It’s hard to find housing that lets you bring in your pet. There’s medical issues that people are having, emergencies that pop up as well as economic or financial issues,” said Kelsey Dickerson, spokeswoman for the Arizona Humane Society.

They recommend pet owners who are in a bind to reach out to either them or other shelters for help, as they have resources available to help out pet owners.

In Arizona, it is also illegal to abandon animals, which is another reason why you should reach out to local shelters first. As for the fate of these pups, the county is expected to pick them up by the end of the week.
