The field, located at Church Farm on Waltwood Road and operating under the name “Explore by Paw” since August 2023, has become a favourite spot for local dog owners.
But after the council’s decision to reject retrospective planning permission, a wave of reactions has flooded in from the community.
Many residents have taken to social media to share their frustration and disappointment with the outcome.
Numerous dog owners and supporters feel the decision is out of touch with the needs of pet owners and the local area.
Social media erupted with comments questioning the justification for the refusal.
One commenter summed up the confusion, saying simply: “Planning permission!
“It's a field!”
This sentiment was echoed by others who questioned why such a facility should be denied when it appeared to be causing little harm.
For some, the facility is more than just a patch of land.
Christine Ormond said: “This [is] crazy, some breeds can only be walked in a secure facility.
“So what now, it shuts and the field goes to waste, no ‘biodiversity' is planted and owners have to go back walking the streets instead of free running in a controlled environment.”
Many echoed her worry that without the field, dog owners would have fewer options for exercising pets safely.
Deborah Prosser highlighted the positive experiences many have had, saying: “We absolutely love taking our dogs there, it is a safe place, why take this away isn’t there more in the world to be looking at than a field for our lovely pets.”
Gemma Levett added: “That field is awesome our dogs love it. Newport Council is a joke,” voicing frustration at the council’s priorities.
Others pointed to the wider community benefits, claiming that secure dog-walking fields help reduce problems like dog fouling in public parks and streets.
Paula Parsons commented: “So Newport City Council close their dog park for god knows how long now we need parks like this absolutely ridiculous decision! My two Staffys are dog reactive I rely on dog parks to give them a bit of freedom.”
Dozens of people have voiced their support for the business in light of the planning permission's refusal.
There was also concern over the impact on local businesses and the future use of the field.
Chris Newton said: “Can I just say my dog isn’t very dog friendly so places like this are amazing for her to explore… problem is nobody is aloud to do well in the country no more and if they do shit like this happens ….this could potentially have a an effect on everything with loss of income ….sad sad people hope they can sort it out.”
Explore by Paw, the company behind the field, said on Facebook that they have been “overwhelmed by support” and added: “We are currently in conversation with all the relevant parties to overcome any problems NCC have with us remaining open.
“When this is concluded we will be going to appeal.”
For now, the future of the field remains uncertain, with many locals hoping a solution can be found.
The debate continues, with strong feelings on both sides about the value and use of green spaces in the community.
