FITCHBURG — Rob Haneisen has been keeping and breeding various reptiles for more than 25 years as a hobby and has always been fascinated by the natural world, starting with hiking in the woods in New England and seeing what lived under logs and in ponds.
As a member of the Finnish Center at Saima Park, Haneisen is excited to host a presentation on his hobby and a discussion on what there is to love about these often-misunderstood animals at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Finnish Center, located at 67 Scott Road.
“I will offer insights as to which reptiles and amphibians may live on the Saima Park property,” he said. “I will also have a sampling of my pets on display at the event.”
Haneisen and his wife Marci and their son Isaac live in Fitchburg.
“I have lived in Fitchburg most of my life,” he said. “I am proud to be a Fitchburg High School and Fitchburg State College alum, working as a journalist, writer, and editor.”
Haneisen and his family are members of the New England Herpetological Society, which is a group of reptile and amphibian enthusiasts, with goals of “education, conservation, and the advancement of herpetology.”
“I enjoy talking to groups about reptiles, especially people who may be unfamiliar with these fascinating creatures,” Haneisen added.
His hope, he says, is to educate people about the complexities and variety within the world of reptiles and amphibians and how they make rewarding pets.
“Through this appreciation, I also aim to garner a greater appreciation for native wildlife and the importance of preserving species throughout the world,” said Haneisen.
The public is invited to attend this event free of charge. Light refreshments will be served.
