BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Those driving by the Kirkwood Mall in Bismarck on Sunday could spot many four-legged friends hanging outside the Scheels parking lot.

In addition to vendors of dog items and treats, Bismarck rescues such as Furry Friends and Miles of Love were invited to this event. They showed off some of their latest animals available for adoption in hopes of attracting potential forever homes.

“It’s a good way to get your animals out there in the public’s eye, and to adopt them or get fosters,” said Julie Schirado, a volunteer with Furry Friends.

Some of these rescues currently have more than 80 dogs in their care. They are foster-based and do not have buildings of their own to receive potential adopters.

“Our motto is, ‘Rescuing dogs one by one until there are none,’ so our big lofty goal is to clear out shelters,” said Amy Rask, a volunteer with Miles of Love.

Because of this, these rescues have gotten creative with their ways of making money to keep helping rescued dogs. In addition to accepting donations, Furry Friends brought down their vet unit to offer dog owners the service of microchipping their dogs for an affordable rate.

“Microchipping helps us raise money to save more dogs, so it’s a good thing,” said Schirado.

These rescues also use these public events to remind pet owners to spay and neuter their animals and to remind those considering getting a pet to adopt, don’t shop.
