Loose Husky-mix dogs in Sacramento’s Natomas area injure pets, prompt public safety warning

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Animal control officers are working to capture three large husky-mix dogs loose in Sacramento’s Natomas neighborhood, where the animals have already injured two pets.

The dogs were last seen near Fong Ranch Road and Natomas High School in the 95833 ZIP code. One of the animals was reported to have escaped from authorities with a catch pole still attached, prompting concerns from city officials and public safety agencies.

Though the dogs have not displayed aggression toward people, officials say they are evasive and unpredictable.

“We know that these dogs have attacked and killed one cat and bitten a dog that was being walked by its owner, so we felt it was appropriate to issue a safety announcement for people in the area to be very cautious when walking their pets,” said Ryan Hinderman, spokesperson for the Front Street Animal Shelter.

Residents are urged to remain alert and avoid contact with the animals.

“For your safety and the safety of your pets, do not approach, touch, or attempt to capture the dogs,” the city’s Animal Services Department said in a statement. “If spotted, call 311 immediately with the dogs’ location and direction of travel.”

Hinderman added that a lot of times when people get bit by an animal, it's usually while trying to break up a dog fight while walking their pet.

The statement also says, “if safely possible, you may help contain them by closing them into your fenced yard or garage until officers arrive.”

Sacramento Vice Mayor and Council Member representing South Natomas Karina Talamantes issued a statement acknowledging community concern and confirming the city’s response.

“Three wolf hybrid dogs have been spotted in and around the South Natomas area. Animal control is actively working on safely capturing these animals,” Talamantes said. “I encourage all South Natomas residents to be alert and call 311 if they see a hybrid wolf dog. Going forward, we are looking at all options to address this issue and ensure the safety of animals in our community.”

As of Tuesday morning, the dogs remained at large.

Hinderman said officials will investigate and determine which dogs were involved in the attack. It could include citations for the owner or potentially be declared dangerous, leading to either adherence to strict rules, euthanizing the animal or surrendering it to a shelter.
