Lorraine Kelly has spoken out after her dog was poisoned on Tuesday leaving her ‘really frightened'.

The ITV presenter, revealed it ‘was tough and go' as she rushed her pet pooch Ruby to the vets after she ate some chocolates in the night.

Chocolate contains a chemical, called theobromine, which makes dogs sick.

Speaking on her own show on Wednesday, Lorraine, 64, said: ‘I had some chocolates wrapped up in a bag as a present. It was in my handbag. She [Ruby] managed to get in there in the middle of the night.

‘She ate a whole bit of chocolate and was very, very ill indeed.'

Sharing a picture of Ruby looking poorly at the vet, she added: ‘We had to rush her to an emergency room. They had to put her on a drip. It was touch and go and it was really, really frightening.'

Sending a message to ITV viewers, Lorraine warned: ‘At this time of year you've got to be so, so careful. You've got to be careful all year-round as well because chocolate's really bad.'

Dr Hilary Jones jumped in to support Lorraine, who admitted she was in ‘a state', he said: ‘Apparently treatment for poisoning in dogs is 75 percent higher in the festive season than at any other time of year.'

Lorraine confirmed to fans that Ruby is doing ‘fine now' and is back at home resting.

She added: ‘She [Ruby] is fine now. We were able to take her home yesterday. She didn't have to stay in overnight. Honestly, I was beside myself.'

Taking to Instagram, Lorraine shared an ‘urgent' message with fans warning about the ‘life threatening' incident.

Alongside a snap of her pet pooch in a dog cone and a red bandage leg with a drip attached while at the vets, she penned: ‘URGENT!! This was our @rubyisasausage yesterday after eating chocolate wrapped up in my bag.

‘She was very poorly and I was a wreck! PLEASE make sure your beloved puppies and dogs don’t eat chocolate or mince pies over #xmas because it can be life threatening. Ruby was on a drip and it was very very scary.

‘She’s totally fine now but I don’t want any other little animal or their human to go through such a trauma #pets #love #scary'.

Speaking on her own show, she said: 'I had some chocolates wrapped up in a bag as a present. She ate a whole bit of chocolate and was very, very ill indeed'
