LOWCOUNTRY, S.C. (WCIV) — Lowcountry animal shelters are offering free adoptions for all animals as they attempt to solve an overcrowding crisis that is plaguing several locations.
From playful dogs to cuddly cats, every pet in need of a home will be available for adoption free of charge, providing a unique opportunity for Lowcountry residents to make a real difference.
Charleston Animal Society, Berkeley Animal Center, and Dorchester Paws joined forces to launch this adoption event.
“Our shelter is overwhelmed with animals who are waiting for a chance at a loving home, and we can’t do this alone,” said Berkeley Animal Center Spokeswoman Heather McDowell in a statement. “We urgently need the community’s support through adoptions during our Lowcountry Paws Unite. Together we can make a difference and give these animals the love and support they deserve.”

According to the shelters, overcrowding poses significant challenges for both animals and staff. They state that with their limited space, resources, and personnel, shelters are struggling to provide the necessary care and attention each animal needs.
“Adult dogs, in particular, often get overlooked because of puppies and then end up staying in the shelter longer,” said Charleston Animal Society Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Aldwin Roman. “The Lowcountry Paws Unite event hopes to give these dogs a chance at a loving home by encouraging people to consider adding a furry friend of any size to their families.”
Available animals span all ages and personalities, ensuring individuals seeking out a new pet can find a companion that fits their lifestyle and preferences.
“Whether you’re looking for an energetic dog to accompany you on outdoor adventures or a gentle, senior cat to curl up by your side, now is the perfect time to visit a local shelter and discover your ideal pet,” said Dorchester Paws Executive Director April Howard.
