KUCHING (Dec 8): Two rabies cases involving free-roaming pet dogs were reported in Sarawak over the past week, according to Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
Wee said that one case was a dog bite incident in Kampung Sui Samarahan, and the other was recorded in Batu Kawah New Township.
“Both cases involved pet dogs that were roaming freely,” he said during his Facebook live session ‘Shall WEE Talk’ yesterday,
Wee urged pet owners and the community to remain vigilant in the fight against rabies, emphasising the importance of dogs receiving regular rabies vaccinations.
“If anyone happens to get bitten by free-roaming dogs or even their own pets, they must first cleanse the wound under running water for at least 15 minutes. After that, immediately seek medical attention at the Sarawak General Hospital,” he advised.
To usher in the new year, Wee said the Kuching South City Council has requested the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak to organise more mass rabies vaccination programmes.
He believes that these campaigns will help reduce the number of rabies cases in Sarawak.
